Prisoners of Beckett
Director Michka Saal
Countries France
Duration 90 min
Synopsis
The story of the meeting of two separate worlds. The world of poetry and freedom and the world of darkness where freedom is unknown. This story begins in a high-security prison in Sweden, where a young actor decides to put on “Waiting for Godot”, by Samuel Beckett, with five prisoners taking the main roles. The rehearsals and shows have a unique authenticity. Beckett himself is touched by the truth that his work holds and grants them the rights to the play. From then on a contagious madness takes hold of them all: the prison director thinks that the prisoners should put the play on in a real theatre and asks the Swedish authorities to authorise its public début. For the first time in the prison's history, five prisoners go out to act before the free world, in a theatre in Gothenburg.
